This tour is
taking you through the beautiful landscapes in the Calvia area, not
far from the tourist resorts of Palma Nova, Magaluf and Santa Posa.
If you come from Peguera, there is a road to Capdella, and you can
start from there. Else getting to Calvia is no problem, just
look at the map and follow the road signs.
In Calvia turn
right. The road sign show Puigpunient. Soon you are leaving
Calvia again and the trip continues on a narrow country road. There
is only little traffic on this road. 4 Km. down you will see a road
leading right. This road takes you over the Na Burguesa hills and
back to Palma de Mallorca near Genova. It is quite a climb uphill
though, but then you are rewarded with a great view over the bay of
Palma.
On this trip
however we continue straight on, and after an other 5 Km. you get to
the junction Palma, Establisament, Puigpunient. Here turn left.
After 6 Km.
you enter Puigpunient. There is a restaurant on the corner just as
you enter town. Also there is a public swimming pool ( only opened
July August). The restaurant serves a "menu del dia" for 6.00 Euro,
Monday through Friday.
From
Puigpunient follow the road sign to Gallilea. Now it is 4 Km, up
hill. As you get to Gallilea, head for the church square. Here is a
small cafeteria for refreshments. They can make a P'am Oli as well,
but don't count on it. More often than not they have no more bread.
Gallilea is
the highest point on the route. 400 meters above sea level. There is
a fantastic view over the Mediterranean sea from here. The village
of Gallilea is worth having a look at as well.
Next stop is
Es Capdella 7 Km. down hill, on a quiet road. You are getting a lot
of great views on the way down.
In Es Capdella,
there are several possibilities. Take the road to Andratx. The road
to Peguera, or as we did, back to Calvia. After 3 Km. You are back
in Calvia.
As You enter
Calvia there is a alternative road down to the coast. On your right
look for the sign "Cementary". That is a narrow country road with
very little traffic, leading to Santa Ponsa. The pavement is a bit
rough however, but it is asphalt all the way. You arrive Santa Ponsa
in the industrial area at a round about. Head right and eventually
you get to the mill of Santa Ponsa.
If you are
coming in reverse direction, from Santa Ponsa to Calvia, and you
want to find this road, then as you get to the round about in the
industrial area (pass the BP gas station) take the road named " Cami
de Son Pillot". There is a road marked "Calvia" as well. That has
better pavement, but also more traffic.
Once back at
the mill in Santa Ponsa, you can head in all directions. The main
road back to Palma Nova has heavy traffic, but also a 1 meter wide
hard shoulder you can use. After 2 Km. you get to the bicycle path
connecting El Toro with Palma Mallorca, and you are safe.
Many places in
the resorts of Magaluf, Palma Nova and Santa Ponsa it is possible
to rent bicycles. Just remember the climb to Gallilea is not for the
inexperienced. It is hard work, that you should not attempt during
summer heat.
Besides this
trip is enjoyable on any wheels, and it is a lot easier if you have
50 cc. to push you along.
